I want you to image that you’re asked to light a candle, and keep it lit. You also have a box of matches, so this is an easy task, right? Oh, but there’s one constraint: you’re handcuffed to a bench, and that bench is securely fixed to the ground. The candle is just out of reach.

You’re trying as hard as you can, but you can’t quite get the candle lit. Every time you get close, the match goes out. Eventually, someone see your struggling, and throws you one of those long matches — the kind people use to light their grills. At last, the candle is lit…for now.

But what happens if a breeze comes by and blows it out? Or it rains? What if it just goes out on its own? Eventually, you will need to re-light that candle. Can you rely on another person with a long match?
